Hyundai Excel Performance
- Throughout its production run, Hyundai gave the Excel a 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine. The engine of the first-generation vehicles produce 68 horsepower and 85 ft. lbs. of torque with a 1,475-cubic centimeter displacement. Second-generation vehicles produce 81 horsepower and 91 ft. lbs. of torque with 1,468-cubic centimeter displacement. All engines have a 9.4-to-1 compression ratio.
- With three-speed automatic, four-speed manual and five-speed manual overdrive transmissions available, the first-generation Hyundai Excels reports a fuel economy range of 27 to 28 mpg for city driving and 31 to 37 mpg for highway driving. The second-generation vehicles offer choices between a manual, four-speed automatic and a five-speed manual transmission--all with overdrive--and lists a fuel economy range of 28 to 29 mpg for city driving and 32 to 36 mpg for highway driving.
- The Hyundai Excel can go from zero to 60 mph within a 12- to 14-second range. It can also cover a quarter-mile distance within 18 to 20 seconds.
