Chicken Coops - The American Dream for Chickens
Chicken coops are the homes of the poultry world.
Their main purpose is to provide shelter from the elements, protection from marauding predators, and a comfortable place to live life.
As such, they are supposed to give your flock most of the same basic features as your home provides for you.
In general, if you have ever seen a raccoon prowling around any part of your neighborhood, extreme weather conditions during the year, a hawk flying in the skies above your home, or any other of hundreds of potential threats to small, defenseless animals, then you will need to plan on building a chicken coop for your flock.
When designing your chicken coops, just like in your own home, here are the essentials things you will want to include:
All they want is a house with many of the same features as you have in your own home, just on a much smaller scale.
Keep this in mind when planning, building, or purchasing blueprints for your chicken coops.

When designing your chicken coops, just like in your own home, here are the essentials things you will want to include:
- A comfortable bedroom to sleep in - Chickens are avid sleepers.
Unlike us, who require nice cushy, soft places to sprawl our entire bodies, hens only need a roost.
This is a pole, or sturdy board, that they stand on, which easily supports their entire weight while they sleep crouching on it. - The family room - In a chicken structure this would be called the run.
It is a larger, common area where all of the chickens in your flock can hang out together, grab a snack off the ground, and socialize with their other members. - Bathroom - Unfortunately, chickens coops basically are bathrooms.
All birds go to the bathroom whenever and however they want.
They don't hold it to go in a certain spot, like your dog or cat.
That is why cleaning the coop is necessary.
However, chickens do like to have an area called a dust box, which is basically a showering area.
It provides them with dry dust, they can coat their bodies with it,which kills off skin irritating critters like lice.
- An inviting meal - Food is ALWAYS exciting for your flock.
They like to have specific meal times, scratch they can pick at throughout their day, and fresh water.
You can place the food and water in a lower traffic area that will have less opportunity to get soiled by your birds. - A quiet nursery room - For chickens, a small, dark, secluded nesting box is the perfect place to lay and nurture their little eggs.
- A garage / storage area - Although this is not meant for your chickens to store their belongings, coop builders often include a storage room for easy access to food and the egg nesting area.
Since chickens don't drive coupes you don't really need to provide parking.
All they want is a house with many of the same features as you have in your own home, just on a much smaller scale.
