How to Build a Street Stock Class Drag Car

    • 1). Purchase a relatively fast car to use as a base for your street stock class drag car. Consider Ford Mustangs or Chevy Camaros if you want an American-made car; a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla could be used for import racing. As long as it is not a custom-built drag car like a rail or "funny" car, it should be legal in a street stock class.

    • 2). Outfit your vehicle with safety equipment. Add a racing seat and harness at minimum. Install a roll cage or roll bars for added safety, and have a professional install the roll cage into your car. Other than your helmet, the roll cage is the only thing that will protect you if the car flips upside down.

    • 3). Decide if you want to add a nitrous oxide system. When this fairly inert gas is pumped into the fuel lines of a street stock drag car, the car gets an almost instant boost of speed. Add one of these systems to your vehicle for the biggest increase in speed for the least amount of money. NOS is the most well known brand, though you should also consider kits from makers like Nitrous Express and Holley.

    • 4). Consider a supercharger. Understand that these devices increase the air pressure into your car's combustion chamber, which increases the power of the car. According to Turbowhistler, a supercharger can add, "46 percent more horsepower and 31 percent more torque."

    • 5). Change your tires to racing slicks if they are legal in your track's street stock class. These tires match their name as they have no tread. They increase traction by a lot but are not Department of Transportation street legal due to the lack of tread.
