What Is the Drug Zetia Prescribed For?

    Uses

    • Zetia is prescribed for high LDL ("bad") cholesterol, low HDL ("good") cholesterol and high triglycerides. Zetia is also prescribed for two rare, genetic disorders known as homozygous sitosterolemia and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.

    Contraindications

    • Before taking Zetia, tell your health care provider if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, have liver disease or are allergic or sensitive to any of its ingredients.

    Drug Interactions

    • Zetia should not be used if you are taking fenofibrate or gemfibrozil. It may also interact with medicines that lower cholesterol or triglycerides, cyclosporine, antacids and herbal medicines like red yeast rice.

    Administration

    • Zetia is taken by mouth with a glass of water and can be taken with or without food.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects requiring immediate medical attention include yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark yellow or brown urine, allergic reactions and feeling unusually tired and weak. Other side effects that do not require medical attention, unless bothersome, include stomach pain or upset, headache, dizziness and diarrhea.
