Gathering Cattle on a Cattle Ranch - 5 Reasons Why a Round-Up is Needed
"Weee doggy!" "Hee Haw!" "Moooooo!" These are the sounds of a cattle round-up.
This is the fun part of owning or working a cattle ranch.
Twice a year on a cattle ranch, the people that work the ranch go out for a few days and round-up the cattle.
They mount their horses and find the herd and push it back to where the main area is to where the ranch is ran.
That's usually where the entrance to the ranch is or by the barn.
There are 5 reasons why a round-up is needed on a cattle ranch.
oIn the beginning of spring, cattle are brought in.
All have to be checked for any sickness.
They are ran through into the holding pens and given shots.
If some are sick, then they are checked out to see if a vet is to be called.
oOther than sickness, cattle are checked for injuries.
Some injuries could be from the wear and tear of the range.
Like bad hooves or maybe a broken leg.
I have seen cattle come in with broken legs.
They must have gone for sometime with this injury.
Even after checking them a few times a week throughout the year, cattle are hard to see if any injuries occurred without an up close check up.
oCattle are made up of steers, cows, and a few bulls.
When they're all brought in, the cows are separated to see how along they are if pregnant.
Through the year, cows get pregnant.
Even if you spot the ones that are pregnant in the middle of season, it seems when round-up happens, there's always some that come in pregnant.
oAfter the cattle are separated from each other, the steers are checked out.
They are checked to see which ones are ready to be sold.
Usually after having them out on the range for a year, they're ready to be sold.
oBefore winter is when the other round-up happens.
All of the same tests are ran over the cattle.
Because after a long summer, they need their shots to prepare for the cold.
