How to Put Up a Wallpaper Border
- 1). To determine how much border paper to buy, measure the walls you want to apply borders to. Subtract windows and doors from the measurement. Buy some extra border paper for matching patterns.
- 2). Clean the walls before putting up the wallpaper border.
- 3). Most wallpaper borders are self-pasting. When putting a border on a painted wall, the paste on the wallpaper is all you need. If you're putting a border on top of wallpaper, use paste-activating adhesive to insure a strong bond.
- 4). To put a wallpaper border on painted walls, fill the bucket or tray with water. Loosely reroll the wallpaper border with the self-pasted side out. Following manufacturer's instructions, submerge the roll of paper in water. Soak for the amount of time recommended, and make sure the pasted side is completely wet.
To put a wallpaper border on wallpaper, unroll the wallpaper with the design side down. Brush on paste-activating gel. - 5). "Book" the wallpaper border by unrolling it on the table, then folding it loosely accordion style. The pasted side should be facing in, and avoid creasing the paper. Booking the wallpaper helps activate the pate. Read manufacturer's instructions to determine how long to book the wallpaper.
- 6). Begin to put up the wallpaper border in an inconspicuous corner of the room. Start half an inch from the corner and apply the wallpaper on the corner and wall, unfolding as you go. Use the sponge to smooth the wallpaper and remove bubbles and creases. Clean up excess glue with the sponge.
- 7). Match the design of the next piece of wallpaper to the end of the previous piece. Use the straightedge to draw a cutting line and cut with scissors or utility knife
- 8). Once you have put up wallpaper all the way around the room and are back at the first corner, apply the paper right up to the corner and cover the overlap.
