Magic
Magic (a/k/a Baby Girl) is a 14 or 15 year old 16H Thoroughbred mare who was purchased at an auction late last year by a woman whom I am now proud to call a friend. Her former (racing?) name was Easy Money, and her racing tattoo is still visible inside her mouth. Magic was about 400 lbs. underweight, her hooves were overgrown, her coat was dull and had large splotches of rain rot. I was on my first horse buying expedition last November, and late one Sunday afternoon, after driving for hours and hours looking at horses that weekend as I did many weekends before and walking away very disappointed, I made a last minute appointment at this woman's stable just on a whim to see this mare?and fell head over heels in love.
Under my friend's excellent care, Magic has since gained at least 200 lbs., her feet are almost back to normal, her coat, while it still has remnants of the rain rot, is now shiny and soft, and the dead hair is starting to be replaced with some new growth. She is definitely "feeling her oats" and can be a handful (especially when she knows it's feeding time), but she's sweet tempered, very well trained, she's mine and I'm crazy about her.
I would really be interested in tracing her ancestry if the tattoo is legible, and when she's at her proper weight (another 200 lbs. or so?), I'd love to breed her. This picture of her was taken in early December 2006 - you can see how thin she still was and how dull her coat was. But she's got a lovely look about her and the sweetest eyes. When she's relaxed, her bottom lip droops - we swear she keeps snacks hidden in there.
