- 1). Find flannel to line your diapers. Because the flannel will be against your baby's skin you want to make sure that it's very soft to prevent chaffing and diaper rash. The best diapers are made out of old flannel sheets that have been washed several times. If you don't have any flannel sheets, you can purchase material from a sewing store.
- 2). Select a pattern. There are several good, cloth diaper patterns available online free.
- 3). Cut the flannel according to the pattern. Bumkin diapers are made with six layers of flannel, so you will need to cut six pieces for each diaper.
- 4). Sew all six pieces of flannel together. The more flannel you use, the more absorbent your diaper will be.
- 5). After you've sewn the flannel together according to the pattern, You need to attach a piece of waterproof cloth to the outside of your diaper, this cloth will help prevent the diaper from leaking between changes. Polartec fleece works well for cloth diapers.
- 6). Sew Velcro tabs onto the corners of your diapers. You're diaper is now ready to be used.
