Identification of AT&T GoPhone SIM Cards
- According to AT&T, a SIM cards is a "specially programmed microchip that inserts into a compatible Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) mobile device." The chips are used to connect your mobile device to the AT&T network. Among other functions, the card encrypts information sent between the device and the network. Without an active SIM card installed, you are only able to make 911 calls.
- AT&T's GoPhone offers the network's prepaid phone service. By using a GoPhone account (as opposed to a post-paid, contract account), you add minutes to the device when you need them. GoPhone is a convenient option for those users who wish to save money on mobile phone service. It is also a good option for those with less-than-average credit, as no credit check is required to open a GoPhone account.
- You can identify a GoPhone SIM card in one distinct way. The physical design of the GoPhone SIM card is the same as the post-paid SIM card. At the time of publication, the GoPhone (and contract) SIM cards have the AT&T logo placed over a blue strip. The network speed, such as 3G, is placed above the blue strip that holds the AT&T logo. Because they are physically identical, you know you have a GoPhone SIM card if, at purchase time, the card containing the SIM card says "Go Phone." Alternatively, the card is a GoPhone account if you dial customer service (611) and you are given the option to add minutes to your account.
- You can get an AT&T GoPhone SIM card at any AT&T retail location across the United States. Or, you can purchase a new phone (which includes the SIM card) from the AT&T website (see Resources). If you already have an AT&T phone, but need to purchase the SIM card to activate GoPhone service, you can buy one from your local electronics store or an online retail site such as Amazon, eCrater or eBay. After you receive the card, you can activate it on the AT&T website.
