Railroad Safety Rules

Do not walk or stand on railroad tracks

    • Walking and standing on railroad tracks is never a good idea, even when there is not a train in sight. Railroad tracks are notorious for having sections where it is easy to fall and injure yourself or to get your foot or other appendage stuck in the tracks, which can also result in injury.

Do not jump on or off of a moving train

    • Jumping on or off of a moving train is a common way to seriously injure yourself. Make sure that the train has come to a full and complete stop before attempting either to board or step off.

Do not throw objects at a train

    • Children sometimes throw objects such as rocks or soda cans at trains, particularly moving trains. Throwing objects at trains is not only a crime, but it is also dangerous. Objects thrown at trains can ricochet and cause injury to you and anyone near you. It can also cause property damage to cars or homes in the vicinity.

Be careful when moving onboard a moving train

    • Passenger trains have several different cars which offer different services such as sleeping quarters, restrooms, and restaurants or other food services. Moving between these cars, particularly while the train is in motion, can cause injury if not done with caution. Do not move between cars when going over rough tracks, as the motion can cause you to fall in the passageway. Move between the cars one person at a time so as not to crowd the detachable passageways between cars or cause the passageway to collapse. Walk carefully in the car and hold on to provided handles to help maintain your balance.
