Before you move, make a checklist of everyone who should have a change of address for you. If you move and rely on a change of address at the post office, it will only cover your mail for less than one year. If you have contacts that need to reach you by mail in the future, you need to let everyone know how to find you. - Contact utilities including water, telephone, mobile telephone, gas and electric to change your address. If you have cable, satellite, Internet, garbage collection or water delivery, call these places and give your new address. Other contacts who will need to know you've moved include lawn service companies, housecleaning companies, attorneys, doctors and veterinarians.
- Change your address with financial companies including banks, credit card companies, retail store credit cards and banks that hold any loans. Change your address with work, insurance companies, pension and IRA account holders and the Department of Motor Vehicle for your driver's license.
- All government offices should have your new address if you have any type of business with the particular office. Agencies to include are unemployment agencies, Social Security agencies, IRS, Veteran Affairs and child support agencies. To help with this process, ask your postal carrier for a change of address kit, obtain one at your nearest post office or change your address online at the United States Postal Service. Don't forget to change your address with voter's registration.
- Contact local newspaper delivery carriers, magazine companies, book clubs, music clubs and mail order subscriptions with your change of address. Most of the time, the United States Postal Service will not forward magazines or other mail order subscriptions without a fee. Contact these companies yourself to ensure that you receive the mail at your new address without interruption.
- Holiday cards and family pictures frequently come through the mail. Make sure to contact friends and family with your new address. Change your address with the church, daycare providers, schools and professional associates.
