The Framing of Body Types in Magazines

    Pear Shape

    • Bodies that are curvier in the mid-section, and carry most of the weight in the waist, hips and thighs, are considered pear-shaped. Leaner arms and legs with a narrow chest fall in this category. Marie Claire magazine suggests women in this shape wear horizontal stripes, especially in swimsuits or snug-fitting dresses to give the upper body a leaner look and lengthen the legs.

    Hour Glass

    • Those with hour glass figures have bodies that contour smoothly with a heavier bust, small waist and hips as even as the bust line. This curvy body type has more options in attire, allowing for styling that includes prints, V-neck tops and cinched waists. According to Fitness magazine, this body type pops most in swimwear when the print on the top and bottom are the same to showcase the evenness of the body's curves.

    Boyish

    • Not everyone likes the ideas of having a boyish frame. However, these body types are usually more athletic builds or frames that are straight and narrow from shoulders to hips and thighs. Creating an illusion of curves with belting, padding and snug-fit skirts with kick pleats is key with this body shape. This body type can use layering and cropped tops effectively, to give the frame a pop.

    Apple

    • If your body is consistently round from your chest to your thighs, you are said to have an apple- or round-shaped body. With an undefined waistline, it's important to know where and how to play up this look. Add layering to this boy shape as well; a layered tank top with a blazer and jeans helps to give the apple frame some shape.
