How to Install an Electrical Outlet Box for an Overhead Light Fixture

How to Install an Electrical Outlet Box for an Overhead Light Fixture

    • 1). Measure the room from side to side and corner to corner to locate the center of the ceiling. Mark the center location for the fixture.

    • 2). Using the stud finder, make sure there are no studs directly over the mark where the mount will be placed. Make sure, however, that there are two studs close on either side of the center mark to mount the bar holding the electrical box.

    • 3). Holding the electrical box up to the ceiling and centered on the mark, trace around the outside for a template to cut a hole in the ceiling.

    • 4). Using the drywall saw, carefully cut along the drawing for the electrical box. Discard what has been cut away and clean the hole of any loose debris.

    • 5). From the attic, carefully remove the insulation from above the hole to allow access to the area. Insert the electrical box into the hole and make flush with the ceiling on the inside of the room. Measure the height of the box that extends into the attic.

    • 6). Using the included hardware, mount the cross bar on the two rafters centered over the hole at the exact height you just measured in the above step. Make sure the bar is securely installed to the rafters as this will support the weight of the lighting fixture.

    • 7). Back inside the room, mount the electrical box to the cross safety bar using the included hardware. Then edge of the electrical box should be flush with the top of the ceiling. Make any adjustments to the cross bar to ensure this is flush.

    • 8). Congratulations, the electrical box is now installed and you are ready to install the fixture according to the manufacturer guidelines.
