What Happens When a Socialist Dictator Goes Out At His Peak Before The Coming Collapse?

Socialism doesn't work, and when the end finally comes after all the lies have been exposed, it is always the people who pay in economic hardship.
At some point the populist leadership which has fed the people a line of goods "runs out of other people's money to spend" and can no longer nationalize or hijacked the industries to feed the greed of the people for more free stuff, it is usually the socialist dictator who falls along with the economy.
Still, what happens when a socialist dictator goes out at or near the height of their popularity? What happens when a socialist dictator either dies, or quits office before the implosion? Will they be considered one of the greats that gave to the people, that cared about the common man, and that had empathy for the masses? Will they go down in the history books as someone worthy of the robust monuments and statues which have been so pervasive in mankind's history of former great leaders? The reason I ask this is because as you know Hugo Chavez, the socialist dictator of Venezuela, looks as if he will not be very long for this world due to complicated health ailments including cancer.
Venezuela has had economic strife, and although Hugo Chavez says he is not finished with his work, one might say that is a good thing, because their currency valuation has been cut in half, and their free-market has been cut down to size.
Further, there is little if any free speech in the media, and things aren't going all that well.
Nevertheless, he did achieve reelection by hook or crook, although we don't know for sure.
It is said that he had captured 60% of the popular vote, although anyone running against him probably feared being arrested, and anyone promoting another candidates in the media, well that media station was shut down.
Many in the country who have been on the receiver side of these free gifts from the government, as the socialist president has been buying votes, feel that he is there savior and a literal reincarnated Simon Bolivar.
The Wall Street Journal had an article published on December 11, 2012 titled "Venezuelans (and Investors) Ponder a Life Without Chavez" by Kejal Vyas and Joese De Corbdoba which noted that Hugo Chavez's cancer had come back and that he has gone back in for emergency treatment and surgery.
Whether or not Hugo Chavez is actually loved by the people, the major media in the country insists that he is.
Because of these news reports and his notoriety it is quite possible that he will go down in history as a great leader amongst at least half of the Venezuelan people, even though in my humble opinion he has destroyed a once great nation economically.
What I am wondering at this point is; who comes after Hugo Chavez? Will the people see the light, and get back to the roots of free-market capitalism so they can economically thrive again? Or will another like-minded leader rise from the people only so they can repeat the economic hardships of the past decade? I am worried, quite worried for the Venezuelan people that it will be the latter.
Please consider all this and think on it.
