Why I Like Mahatma Gandhi

Without paying big thanks to Mahatma Gandhi for securing the wonderful freedom for our great country India, I cannot think of going ahead.
India has grown tremendously in the last 6 decades socially and economically: all credit goes to Mahatma Gandhi.
Because, without the basic right of freedom, an Individual or the society cannot grow and prosper.
The word" Atma or Atman"(Sanskrit) means" Soul' or "Spirit" and the word" Maha" (Sanskrit) denotes" Great or Giant ".
Hence, the word "Mahatma '' refers to '"Great Soul ", "Supreme Spirit".
The title 'Mahatma " is reported to be used by Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, who led the freedom struggle through his Indian National Army from Burma (now 'Myanmar").
Right from the childhood, Gandhi was humble and simple but cultivated the will power in any of his ventures; be it studies or the person himself.
After his schooling in Gujarat and soon after his father's death, he was sent to England for higher studies leading to the legal profession as a Barrister.
Much against the desire of him to stay back in India.
His will power and determination enabled him to cope with all the hardships he faced during the studies in England.
After returning from England, he practiced the trade that he learned in England: but could not shine due to the political and social reasons.
So to make earnings for the family, he was sent on an assignment for consultancy to a merchant firm in South Africa.
That was the turning point for Gandhi to become a full-fledged barrister and later as a leader to fight for civil rights of the people suppressed and ill-treated by the then Government in that region.
With lot of expertise and experience, he returned to India.
He got involved in securing and protecting the rights of local people in Gujarat.
Gradually, he made acquaintances with several other political leaders of India and started engaging himself in the activities of Indian National Congress which raised the first freedom campaign for the Indians.
Five great principles of Gandhi that I cherish to follow and practice, are: 1) Patience: It enabled him to be tolerant during the tough situations.
2) Perseverance: Determined and repeated efforts proved successful.
3) Modesty: Simplicity and Humility are hallmarks.
4) Peace lover: He invented the concepts of Nonviolence (Ahimsa) and Non-Cooperation movements against the British government.
But at the same time, he volunteered to serve the soldiers during the wartime also.
5) Pious: He acted based on the inner instinct or call, which he identified as God.
This manifested as honesty to the core.
Let us apply the principles of Mahatma Gandhi in our daily life and spread the message of peace and compassion in the society.
