How to Replace Emergency Brakes in a VW Passat
- 1). Determine which type of emergency brakes your VW Passat will need. Emergency brakes typically function by activating the regular braking system on the driving wheels. The emergency brakes for the VW Passat use the disc brakes on the rear wheels.
- 2). Remove the rear wheels with a socket wrench. Release the clip that attaches the parking brake cable to the rear brake caliper and disconnect the parking brake cable with a socket wrench.
- 3). Use a wrench to clamp the guide pin while you remove the upper mounting bolt for the rear brake caliper with a socket wrench. Move the rear brake caliper down so you can access the brake pads. Separate the brake pads from pad carrier.
- 4). Rotate the brake piston clockwise to retract it into the housing and install the new brake pads onto the pad carrier. Apply a thread-locking compound to the threads on the upper mounting bolt for the brake caliper. Use a torque wrench to tighten the upper mounting bolt to 271 in. lbs.
- 5). Complete the installation by reversing the remaining removal steps. Check the parking brake operation and adjust the cable tension if needed.
