Set of Questions for Premarital Counseling Sessions

    Marriage Expectations

    • Ask the couple why they want to get married. Find out what they expect of each other within marriage. Question the couple on what each of them will bring to the marriage. This line of questioning will eliminate any unrealistic expectation that the couple has for one another.

    Financial Concerns

    • Questions about finances are extremely important for a premarital couple. Ask the couple about their financial plan, how to blend their finances and which debts each of them have. You should also require them to make a budget. This will eliminate any financial surprises when the couple gets married.

    Religion

    • Ask the couple what their religion is. If the religions differ, ask them how they plan to blend their religions. This includes how the religions affect the holidays. Ask the couple where they plan on attending services (if anywhere). Also, find out how religion will affect current or potential children.

    Work

    • Find out what the couple plans to do for work after they get married. Ask them if this will change after starting a family. Question the couple about any other possible job changes in the future.

    Labor

    • Question the couple on expectations of labor at home. Ask them how they plan on dividing the housework. This includes the majority of the cooking, grocery shopping and meal planning. Find out who will be in charge of car maintenance. Discuss the plan for paying bills and handling the budget.

    Children

    • Ask them whether they plan to have children and how soon. Find out what they plan to do for discipline. Questions the couple about how they plan to provide for their family. Discuss whether they will use birth control before having children.
