How to Stencil a Garage Wall

    • 1). Position your stencil on the wall. Ensure that it is level and tape it to the wall. One piece of tape on opposing corners should suffice. Make sure the stencil is completely flat. If you will be stenciling a design in a straight line, lightly draw a line along the top of the stencil as a reference point to line up the next repetition.

    • 2). Pour stencil paint on the saucer or plate. Use an amount about the size of a quarter.

    • 3). Dip just the tip of the stencil brush into the paint. Dab the brush on a paper towel to distribute paint over the entire tip of the brush and to remove excess paint. The brush should be nearly dry. It is imperative that very little paint remains on the brush.

    • 4). Apply the paint using a swirling or dabbing motion. Begin on the edge of each design and work inward. With your free hand, hold the stencil flat and still. To build a darker color, go over the design again rather than applying one thick layer of paint.

    • 5). Remove the stencil from the wall and repeat the process on the wall where you choose. Touch up any bleeding or smears with the base paint and a small artist's brush.

    • 6). Clean the stencil and brush thoroughly using soap and water. Wipe the stencil dry with a paper towel and allow the brush to air dry.
