- Most patients have cramps in the form of intermittent lower abdominal pain. However, pain can be severe and nearly constant if there is a complete colon blockage.
- Patients may be completely unable to pass gas or feces, or they can only pass thin or watery feces with extreme difficulty. This represents the difference between a complete and partial obstruction.
- The abdomen may become progressively more distended and tender to the touch.
- Nausea may be present, and vomiting can occur as the condition worsens.
- Untreated colon blockages can lead to fever and infection from bacterial overgrowth, dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
