How to Decorate Windows With Sheer Draperies
- 1). Measure the window where you want to hang sheer drapery panels. Sheer draperies come in a wide variety of sizes, and you will need to purchase a size appropriate for the window where you want to hang them.
- 2). Ask for samples of materials. Some stores that sell sheer draperies offer small pieces of material that you can take home and test against the wall color of your room. Use these samples to experiment with the right fabric colors and patterns before making your purchase.
- 3). Choose sheer draperies that will create the effect you want. For example, hang solid or patterned pink or purple sheer draperies in a young girl's room for a whimsical, princess-inspired effect. On kitchen windows, consider hanging checkered sheer draperies for a new take on classic cafe curtains. Hang white sheer draperies on the windows of a beach-inspired home for a clean, airy feel. In a formal living room or dining room, select floor-length sheer draperies for an elegant look that avoids the heaviness of thicker curtains.
- 4). Mount a curtain rod at the window where you will hang the sheer draperies. Match the curtain rod to the style of draperies you have purchased. For a window that has additional coverings such as blinds or shades, place the brackets for the rod on the outside of the brackets that hold the shades. If your sheer panels will serve as an interior layer under thicker curtains, mount the two layers of curtains on separate rods. Use a thinner, nondecorative rod for the sheers, placing the mounting brackets approximately 1 inch below the brackets for the rod that will hold the thicker drapes.
- 5). Place the sheer draperies onto the curtain rod. Secure the rod into the mounting brackets.
