The Lone Star State has many of the largest US cities within it borders. Six Texas cities are among the 20 largest cities in the US, according to 2010 US Census data. The size of a city's government reflects the size of its population, so large cities necessarily have large municipal workforces.


1. Houston


Houston is by far the largest city in Texas with a population of 2.1 million. It is the fourth largest city in the US. Situated in Harris County, Houston is second only to Jacksonville, Florida, in the land area it covers. Houston is linked to the Gulf of Mexico by the Houston Ship Channel.More »


2. San Antonio


San Antonio is the second largest city in Texas and seventh largest in the US. San Antonio's tourist attractions include the Alamo, Riverwalk, San Antonio Zoo, Sea World and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Interstate 10 runs through San Antonio to form the nation's southernmost east-west route to travel from the east coast to the west coast, or vice-versa. Interstate 10 stretches from the Pacific Ocean at Santa Monica, California, to the Atlantic Ocean at Jacksonville, Florida. Dallas is third largest city in Texas and the ninth largest in the US. Dallas is the largest city in the area of Texas known as the Metroplex, which includes three other top ten cities: Fort Worth, Arlington and Plano. 4. Austin

Arlington is the seventh largest city in Texas. It lies between Dallas to the east and Fort Worth to the West. Arlington has grown because residents can work in Dallas or Fort Worth with manageable commutes. The Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League opened a new stadium in Arlington in 2009.
