EIC Instructions

    • 1). Find out whether you qualify. It is easy to determine your eligibility by using the EITC calculator on the Internal Revenue Service website. Answer a few questions and provide basic income information to determine whether you are eligible and how much you will receive through the Earned Income Tax Credit. This calculator is available in English and Spanish.

    • 2). Read the basic rules. To be eligible, you must have earned income from employment, self-employment or another source of revenue that meets certain requirements. You also must meet the requirements for Workers without a Qualifying Child or have a child that helps you meet the Qualifying Child Rules.

    • 3). Check your state eligibility. In 22 states, the District of Columbia, New York City and some counties in Maryland, there is an EITC that is available at the state and local level. Generally, if you qualify for the federal EITC, you also may qualify for the state or local EITC and receive a bigger cut on your taxes.

    • 4). Gather your W-2s. In the past, you were able to get an advance on the EITC that would go in your paycheck. After Dec. 31, 2010, however, this will no longer be an option. To get the EIC, you must file taxes.

    • 5). File your taxes. You can prepare your taxes yourself or hire a tax preparer. If you make less than a certain amount, you can use a tax preparer online for no free. The quickest way to get your EITC back is to set up a direct deposit option in which your tax refund will go directly to your bank account.
