How to Travel to Swakopmund, Namibia
- 1). Arrive in Windhoek, Namibia. Economy, round-trip flights from New York to Windhoek typically cost between $1,800 and $2,500. A visa is not required for U.S. tourists visiting Namibia for less than 90 days.
- 2). Rent a car in Windhoek. This can be done simply and easily right at the airport. An economy rental car will cost you between $30 and $40 per day.
- 3). Follow the C28 (a national highway) out of Windhoek, heading west. You'll drive into the beautiful desert, flanked on left and right by wilderness tracts stretching all the way to the horizon.
- 4). Stop for a break, a snack and a gas fill in the town of Karibib, about 100 miles outside of Windhoek. Karibib is located at almost the exact halfway point between Swakopmund and Windhoek. The town is famous for its marble, allegedly the "hardest" on the planet.
- 5). Arrive in Swakopmund, Namibia, after driving an additional 100 miles. Swakopmund is a quaint, pleasant town hugging the coastline. Its German origins are immediately evident in both the architecture and the cuisine; sample the town's famous weinerschnitzel. The town is ideal for relaxation--it isn't crowded at all, its beaches are pristine and a short walk north or south along the coastline can ensure utter privacy.
