Basement Layout Ideas

    Game Room

    • One of the most common uses for a basement is to create a game room. The planning is pretty simple; you need a large, finished space in which to place a pool table, ping pong table, and/or arcade games. If the game room is for adults as well as kids, you might consider installing a wet bar. Also, a bathroom is a very convenient addition to your basement if you plan to use it as a game room.

    Guest Suite

    • If you lack an extra bedroom for guests, you might consider turning all or part of your basement into a guest suite. If you create this kind of space, however, take note of where windows are located in your basement, if any. If your basement lacks any sort of natural light, a bedroom might not be the best option and may even be against city building codes. Consult a contractor. Again, a bathroom is a necessary addition to your basement if you plan on using it as a guest space.

    Home Gym

    • A home gym is a great option for your basement layout, especially if you are on a tight budget. You don't have to install any expensive finishes; a concrete floor and drywall are adequate. If you are able to spend a little more money, consider installing mirrors on the wall and mounting a television at an adequate viewing height. Install cardio and weightlifting equipment for a complete fitness center in your own home. You might also consider installing a sauna/bathroom if the plumbing configuration allows.

    Kids' Playroom

    • A kids' playroom is another inexpensive option for a basement layout. The kids will have space to run around without damaging furniture or cluttering your home with toys. Consider installing cheap carpet tile squares on the floor, especially if you have younger children who are crawling.

    Home Office

    • If your desk is shoved into the corner of your dining room or sharing space with your living or sleeping area, it might be time to create a dedicated office. This is especially helpful if you tend to leave your desk cluttered. Finish a portion of your basement and install shelves, file cabinets, and work tables so you have plenty of room to spread out. If you have adequate space, this can be combined with other options, such as the guest suite or gym.

    Home Theater

    • A basement is very conducive to setting up a home theater, since it is typically a dark space. Finish the space and install a large TV or projector screen, sofas and lounge chairs, and soft lighting. If plumbing allows, a mini bar and bathroom are also very convenient when entertaining guests. If your budget allows, splurge on a top-of-the-line surround sound system for the complete theater experience.
