- Sidewalks are commonly given a light broom finish, achieved by pushing or pulling a concrete broom across the sidewalk before the concrete has set. This finish increases traction in inclement weather.
- Concrete sidewalks are typically four inches thick. If the sidewalk must carry heavier maintenance vehicles, for example light truck-mounted snowplows, a thickness of six inches or more may be specified.
- Joints are used to control cracking. Tooled and saw-cut joints are two of the most common joint types. While hand tooled joints are typically installed, saw-cut joints are often specified for sidewalks and multi-use paths with heavy bicycle traffic since they allow for a smoother ride.
