Insurance Requirements for Dump Trucks

Dump trucks require a different type of insurance policy than the standard auto insurance policy because dump trucks are classified as heavy commercial vehicles. Begin your search for dump truck insurance by compiling a list of companies that offer such policies. Obtain multiple quotes for a comparison of price against coverage to select a plan that best suits your needs.

    Primary Liability Coverage

    • According to FinWeb.com, primary liability is the only type of coverage that is an actual requirement for dump trucks. Bodily injury and property damage are both included under the liability coverage in an insurance policy to protect the insured for accidents where they are at fault. Bodily injury (BI) covers hospital and medical bills, rehabilitation, long-term nursing care, funeral expenses, lost earnings, pain and suffering, and other expenses, up to the limits you select. Property damage (PD) covers the expense to repair or replace damaged items, including other vehicles, lamp posts, houses or even a pet, up to the limits you select.

    Physical Damage Coverage

    • Physical damage is actually a group of coverages that includes collision insurance, comprehensive insurance, as well as fire and theft with combined additional coverage (CAC). Collision insurance protects against damages that may occur to the dump truck. Examples of this are collisions with other objects, overturns or roll-overs. Comprehensive insurance also protects against damages to the dump truck by paying for repair or replacement in the event of fire, theft, vandalism, windstorm, collision with an animal and breaking glass. Fire and theft with CAC is a limited form of comprehensive insurance and is geared to more specific damages, such as fire, theft, windstorm, hail, earthquake, lightning, explosion, flood or rising waters, malicious mischief or vandalism, collision with an animal, and stranding, sinking, burning, collision or derailment of any conveyance in or upon which your vehicle is being transported.

    Cargo Coverage

    • Cargo coverage, while optional and not required by law, is one that should be considered in the policy to insure what is being transported. While some companies are not concerned that a dump truck owner's cargo coverage is not included, other companies may not hire you for this very reason. Additional coverage for the possessions of the driver may be included in the insurance policy. Of course, this will increase the policy's premium, but it is always a wise decision to insure one's personal possessions if possible.
