What Is Tax Free on Tax Free Weekend in Alabama?
- Clothing items that are under $100 and for general wearing purposes are exempt from state sales tax on the no-tax weekend. Common examples would include items such as jeans, shoes, pants, shirts, pajamas, socks and school uniforms. It does not include many clothing accessories such as belt buckles, jewelery, purses, protective equipment and sports equipment. Clothing items that are for specific purposes and not for general use may not be eligible for tax exemption.
- Computers that are sold in a set that includes a CPU or Central Processing Unit are exempt during the Alabama tax-free weekend. Computer parts that are sold separately or not part of a complete set including a CPU are subject to the normal state sales tax. Computer packages over $750 are subject to the state sales tax, as the law only permits packages under $750 to be exempt. Items that are exempt also include printers, PDAs and printer supplies.
- Certain identified school supplies that are less than $50 per item will be exempt from state sales tax in Alabama. School supplies include book bags, crayons, glue, pens and pencils, notebooks, calculators, highlighters, loose leaf paper, and many other items generally accepted as school supplies. Certain art supplies are also included. Art supplies that are exempt from this tax include paint, clay, paintbrushes and watercolors.
- Books have two classifications for tax-exempt purposes in Alabama. A bound book that has an ISBN is considered to be exempt from state sales tax. ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number, the unique number that identifies published books. Periodicals, newspapers, magazines, and other non-bound documents are considered taxable.Textbooks that have a primary use in an education course and that are between $30 and $50 in cost are also exempt from state sales tax. In order to be exempt from taxes, they have to appear on an official schoolbook list. Reference maps and globes are also included as tax exempt if the cost is between $30 and $50.
