Enhancements to the New GI Bill

The Post-9/11 GI Bill, or New GI Bill, as it has been nicknamed provides good financial support for veterans to gain an education.
It supports payments for schooling as well as housing while attending an approved institution.
Veterans must have more than 90 days of service on or after September 11, 2001 and have received an honorable discharge.
Those service men and women who were disabled in the line of duty also are eligible, and the threshold is 30 days for those with a service-related disability.
The New GI Bill will pay: Tuition and fees: This amount can't be more than the maximum in-state tuition for a public school in the state where it's located.
This includes work on undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as vocational training at an approved IHL (Institution of Higher Learning.
) If attending a more expensive school, there is a program called "Yellow Ribbon Program" which may help reimburse excess tuition and fees.
Housing Allowance: Each eligible veteran is also entitled to a monthly housing allowance which is based on the BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) for a rank E-5 who has dependents, based on the school's location.
Those veterans attending a school that does not have a main campus in the United States, the BAH rate has been fixed at $1,347.

Those enrolled in online training do not now receive the housing allowance, nor do those who remain on active duty.

This is paid in proportion to the enrollment status according to the New GI Bill.
The book stipend is not paid to those on active duty.
Rural Benefit: Veterans who live in a county that is sparsely populated are eligible for a one-time payment of $500 to help offset transportation costs.
Changes in store for the New GI Bill in the next few months include enhancements to cover more National Guard members under Title 32 or Section 502 (f), and enhancements to allow more vocational and technical programs as well as OJT (on the job training), correspondence schools, and flight programs.
It also adds a monthly stipend for those enrolled in distance learning, at a fixed rate of $673.
