How to Become a Gymnastics Judge

    • 1). Find your Regional Judging Director (RJD) and State Judging Director (SJD) by going to the National Association of Women's Gymnastics Judges website (www.nawgj.org), clicking on "Directory-Regional/State" and then clicking on the region in which your state is located.

    • 2). Contact your RJD and/or your SJD, who can provide you with information on certification rules and procedures, where to find study guides for the exam, how to register for testing and where to find gymnastic clinics.

    • 3). Attend judging clinics, which will help you gain the basic knowledge and skills through practical experience in judging compulsory gymnastic routines.

    • 4). Obtain a study guide and rule book, and use them to prepare for judging exam. These materials can be found on the USA Gymnastics website (www.usa-gymnastics.org) on the Technical Materials page.

    • 5). Register for and take the written test for entry-level judges. Passing the test with a score of 70% or higher will give you a 5/6 rating, the rating at which all new judges start.

    • 6). Obtain professional membership with USA Gymnastics and the National Association of Women's Gymnastics Judges. A fee is required for these memberships, and they can take several weeks to process.

    • 7). Obtain safety certification and a complete background check through USA Gymnastics.
