German Language Camps for Kids
- Founded in 1986, this annual week-long German language day camp is held during the summer near Gravelly Lake in Washington state. Classes are divided by language proficiency and the ages of eligible students. Instructors use The Natural Way and Total Physical Response Storytelling teaching methods. Teacher to student ratio is approximately 1-to-12.
- Zauberwelt is a kid's (ages 8 to 15) German language immersion summer camp hosted by the German Saturday School of Portland and sponsored by the German American Society. The week-long camp in the Columbia River Gorge at Menucha Retreat and Conference Center in Corbett, Oregon, gives kids a total German language and cultural experience. Camp runs from Sunday to Friday on dates to be decided.
- Founded in 1961, the Waldsee German Language Village is located on Turtle River Lake near Bemidji, Minnesota. All of the buildings on the property are modeled after a real German village. Five weatherized buildings are used as sleeping quarters for eight to 13 villagers. Some of the cabins include bathroom facilities and some do not. Nature walks and campfires on the beach are included in this German language experience.
- Mountain Camps, sponsored by Colorado International School, are full language immersion camps in the Colorado Rockies. The camps are held annually at either Estes Park or Granby, Colorado campgrounds owned by the YMCA. Activities include learning survival skills, specific cultural activities, rock climbing and hiking. Children from the age of 7 years old may register for these one-week programs.
