    Explore the Local History

    • Once the busiest fishing port in the northeastern United States, Sag Harbor has long been known for its maritime history and culture. Whaling, in particular, provided jobs for the men of Sag Harbor and many families in the area are descended from these sailors. Dating back to 1845, the building which houses the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum was built by Benjamin Huntting II, a town leader and ship-owner once known throughout the region. In addition to its permanent collection of whaling memorabilia and town antiquities, the museum hosts visiting collections throughout the year, which often include objects loaned to the museum by local families. Open from mid-May through October, museum hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 .p.m Monday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
