How to Drift a Corolla
- 1). Although you can drift a real-wheel drive Corolla without altering it, making a couple modifications will make the process of drifting a little easier. Adjusting the vehicle's suspension with modifications, such as coilovers or aftermarket shocks and springs, will lower the car and make it more responsive to steering. Installing a limited-slip differential ensures that both rear wheels are spinning, making drifting easier and allows the car to transfer torque to whichever wheels have traction.
- 2). Initiate a drift using one of two techniques: clutch kicking or braking. For a clutch-initiated drift, push the clutch in as you near a turn. Keep your foot on the gas pedal, and when you release the clutch, the sudden power will cause the back wheels to spin and lose traction, forcing the rear of the car into the turn. To initiate a drift using a brake-based technique, keep your foot on the gas and quickly and forcefully pull the emergency brake as you enter a turn--this will cause the back wheels to lock up and lose traction.
- 3). Once the drift is initiated, you have to hold the drift to avoid spinning out. Use a combination of steering and throttle control to keep the car from straightening out or regaining traction. While the car is sliding, countersteer, or turn the wheel the opposite way, to keep it sideways. If you feel the car straightening out, you can correct it by using the emergency brake to get more angle on the drift.
- 4). To end a drift, lift your foot off the gas and allow the car to straighten out. However, if you're entering another turn, lift off the gas and turn the steering wheel in the other direction. If you have enough speed and power going into the second turn, you don't have to clutch kick or use the emergency break to initiate the drift. However, Corollas typically don't have much power, so you may have to counteract this by clutch kicking multiple times. Again, you can use the emergency brake during the drift to improve your angle if you feel the car straightening out.
