Connecticut Monuments

    Hartford, Connecticut

    • The state capital of Hartford is Connecticut's political center and is home to many landmarks, historic sites and monuments. Dedicated in 1886 to commemorate the 4,000 citizens of the town who served in the Civil War, the Civil War Memorial Arch is touted as the first permanent U.S. war memorial. Hartford's Old Statehouse and Keney Memorial Clock Tower are located in its downtown area. The Old Statehouse was completed in 1796 and also houses the Museum of Natural and Other Curiosities. The Keney Memorial Clock Tower was completed in 1898 by the Keney brothers in memory of their mother.

    New Haven, Connecticut

    • The Harkness Memorial Tower has a distinguished spot on the campus of New Haven's Yale University. Completed in 1921, this monument is one of Yale's most recognizable. It was donated in honor of former Yale graduate Charles William Harkness by his mother Anna. Commissioned in 1990 and completed in 1992 is New Haven's Amistad Memorial by sculptor Ed Hamilton. This bronze sculpture depicts the Amistad Incident that involved the capture, imprisonment and return of a group of African natives.

    Groton, Connecticut

    • Fort Griswold in the town of Groton, Connecticut, is a significant historical site that contains relics of important past events. Visit structures like The Groton Battle Monument and Museum. This 134-foot granite obelisk was dedicated in 1830 to those who defended Fort Griswold from British invasion during the Revolutionary war. The fort area also contains battle sites and a preserved colonial period home.

    Stonington, Connecticut

    • The small Connecticut town of Stonington has a number of small monuments that tell of America's history and colonial beginnings. The Wequetequock burial ground pays homage to the area's early founders with a large stone monument and inscription. Walk through the seaside area of Stonington Borough to visit the site of a historic naval battle of 1812, as well as the local Lighthouse Museum.
