RADAR Detector Laws in Oregon

    Definition

    • Radar detectors are electronic devices used to detect whether police or other law enforcement officials are monitoring a driver's speed. Owners typically place radar detectors on their dash and use them to avoid speed traps. Most radar detectors make a loud beeping noise when they detect police speed radars.

    Commercial Vehicles

    • Oregon law defines a "commercial vehicle" as a vehicle "used for the transportation of persons for compensation or profit" or a vehicle "designed or used primarily for the transportation of property." Vehicles that fit this definition cannot legally use radar detector in Oregon.

    Radar Jammers

    • Radar jammers are illegal in all 50 states. Radar jammers are devices that emit radio frequency signals to obstruct radar devices by inundating them with noise.

    Other States

    • Most states have similar radar detectors laws to Oregon's radar detector laws. The trend in most states is to allow radar detectors in passenger vehicles and prohibit their use in commercial vehicles. However, the District of Columbia and Virginia are the only jurisdictions in the country where radar detectors are uniformly prohibited for passenger vehicles.
