Nurse Practitioners vs MD Providers in Diabetes Care

Nurse Practitioners vs MD Providers in Diabetes Care

Practice Implications

Patients with diabetes are being seen and managed in the primary care setting more often. The free clinics that attempt to care for underserved patients in the community find their numbers increasing significantly. The NP-run diabetic clinic needs to meet all of the ADA guidelines to improve and maintain patients' health. NPs need to continue to demonstrate their ability to give quality, evidence-based care to patients with diabetes.

More research needs to be done regarding how ethnicity factors into specific clinics based on their community locations, how BP can be reduced in the diabetic in a free clinic with limited resources, and what the characteristics of a volunteer-provider clinic versus a paid-provider clinic demonstrate. With more evidence-based research comes better care for our patients.
