One can hardly find a house without a computer or a laptop these days. Working professionals and those who travel often opt for laptops. On the other hand, a PC is preferred for home usage as it needs less maintenance and mobility is not a requisite. However, the real problem arises when the home owners have to move to another place. Here is a small guide to make your computer shifting process simpler –

Take a backup of your valuable data – You should perform a regular backup of your data to keep your information safe and unaltered. When you are moving, it becomes all the more important. You may have plans to pack the CPU in the safest way but a small physical damage can cause loss of data as it is one of the prime reasons for hard drive failure. Make a copy of all your important information on an external storage device such as a compact disk or a USB storage device.

Shut down the device at least two hours before packing it up – Heating is a very common action that takes place in the CPU. Even after shutting it down, it takes a good half an hour to radiate all the heat generated. You wouldn't want to face a situation when the packing material melts and gets stuck to your CPU's back. So shut down the PC, turn off the power, disconnect the surge bar and remove all the peripheral wires from the back of the CPU. Gently fold these cables avoiding pulling or crushing and pack them separately and do not forget to label the package for easy recognition during reinstalling.  

Packing the monitor – If you have a CRT monitor, you need to handle it very carefully as these are heavier than others. Never place the monitor on its screen as it may damage it. The best way is to use the original packaging that has come with the PC. If not available, you can ask for special packing boxes from professional movers. Also ask for bubble wrap as it secures the apparatus from sudden shocks and vibrations.

The CPU – The CPU should be packed in a way so that the motherboard lies flat on the ground. Generally the motherboard is fixed on the side where the ports for connecting the peripherals are provided. After packing the tower, also make sure to indicate the motherboard direction on the box as positioning it upside down may result into loosening of the cards installed in it.

Packing the peripherals – You cannot ignore the importance of packing the peripherals as without them, you wouldn't be able to operate your PC. Wrap all of these peripherals in a bubble wrap and place them in boxes as per their size. Do not forget to remove the ink cartridges or laser ribbons from the printer.
