How to Sand Painted Porch Floors

    • 1). Sand down the rough wood surface and large amounts of peeling paint first using 36- to 60-grit sandpaper. Move the sander in the direction of the wood grain, according to the House Painting Info website, to prevent excess damage to the wood. Apply a light pressure to remove just the paint and not remove too much of the wood's surface.

    • 2). Smooth out the wood after removing the initial coat of paint using 80- to 100-grit sandpaper.

    • 3). Sweep or vacuum the dust off the porch thoroughly. All the dust needs to be removed before attempting to repaint or stain.

    • 4). Stain or paint the porch using the new desired color according to the manufacturer's instructions.
