How to Make a Flower Bed With Flagstones

Things You'll Need

Instructions

1

Run a garden tiller along the outer edge of your potential flower bed at a depth of 6 inches to create a trench.
2

Use a shovel to widen the trench to 12 inches, maintaining the 6-inch depth.
3

Lay down a 1-inch layer of gravel along the bottom of the trench. Pour a 1-inch layer of coarse sand over the gravel. These will help with drainage underneath the flagstones once you install them.
4

Lower the flagstones into the trench, fitting them as tightly together as you can. You can use mismatched flagstones and insert them like puzzle pieces, or you can lay uniform flagstones along the entire length for a different look.
5

Tap the flagstones with a rubber mallet gently to make sure they are secure. Fill in any cracks between the flagstones with crushed limestone, and sweep the flagstones to remove any extra limestone.
6

Water the flagstones with a garden hose to settle them. Tap any that become loose in the settling with the rubber mallet.
7

Run the garden tiller over the interior of the garden bed at a depth of 3 inches to loosen the soil and remove any existing grass or weeds. Pull out the grass with your hands and discard it. Break up any clumps of soil with your hands.
8

Cover the interior of the garden bed with a 2-inch layer of organic mulch to keep out weeds until you are ready to plant.
