How to Design Your Own Routed House Sign
- 1). Level the template paper on a flat surface and tape down all four corners.
- 2). Write on the template using the letter stencils. Write a name, quote, or any text needed on the sign.
- 3). Write on the template using number stencils. These stencils will be beneficial for phone numbers and addresses.
- 4). Draw on any design you feel suitable for the sign. If you are making a sign for a lake house, consider drawing a fish or some waves.
- 5). Cut all of the numbers, letters, and designs carefully using the X-acto knife. Avoid tearing the paper, which can ruin the template. Cut over a cutting board to avoid damaging the surface.
- 6). Tape template over the solid wood board. Align the edges of the paper with the edges of the board to ensure a straight layout.
- 7). Trace the template design on to the solid wood piece carefully and remove paper template.
- 8). Route the design using the router tool. Carefully outline each element of the design using the router bit and work toward the center of each piece.
