Late-Onset Group B Streptococcus in the Late-Preterm Neonate

Late-Onset Group B Streptococcus in the Late-Preterm Neonate

Developmental History

On the 16th day of life—now corrected to a gestation of 36 weeks and 1 day—the neonate had been able to maintain appropriate thermoregulation, passed her car seat and hearing screenings and her pulse oximetry screening for critical congenital heart defect, and was progressing toward her last developmental task before hospital discharge—that is, taking all of her feedings by mouth. She was receiving expressed breast milk via bottle and a nasogastric gavage tube. Her NICU course before this toxic presentation was considered within normal limits for a neonate born at her gestational age by the treatment team, and thus she was being prepared for discharge.
