How to Change the Brakes on a Saturn SL1

    • 1). Jack up the front of the SL1 using a floor jack under the front jack point.

    • 2). Place jack stands under the side jack supports under the front door and lower the vehicle onto the stands.

    • 3). Remove the wheel lug nuts using an impact wrench and pull the wheel off the wheel hub.

    • 4). Place a C-clamp over the end of the brake caliper. Make sure the screw end of the caliper is flat against the outboard brake pad that is facing you.

    • 5). Tighten the C-clamp to force the caliper piston (which you can't see at this point) back into the caliper. The pad will move and a gap will develop between the caliper bracket and the pad. When you can no longer tighten the C-clamp, remove the clamp from the caliper.

    • 6). Unbolt the caliper pin bolt (the bottom-most bolt on the back of the caliper), and swing the caliper up and away from the caliper bracket and rotor assembly.

    • 7). Remove the old pads and insert the new pads. Then, close the caliper and reassemble the brakes. Installation is the reverse of removal.
