Benefits and Applications of LEDs
With the ever growing crisis in the energy sector all over the world the saving became a vital issue. LED technology was not new to the manufacturers but its developed grew with time looking into the ever growing crisis. The main advantage was the saving in power up to 25% at least. The electricity consumed over a lifetime by a single metal filament bulb costs five to ten times the original purchase price of a bulb itself.
The induction of CFL and LED was the only choice left with the manufacturers, if one would not produce the others would or in other countries, the demand was there and it has to be met either ways.
LEDs are small solid light bulbs which are extremely energy efficient. They are grouped together as a cluster with diffuser lens to broaden the applications. So much so, as much as 180 small bulbs can be used as a cluster.
The listed advantages are as follows:
• They are long lasting and can last up to 10 times as long as any other light source mainly Fluorescent, whereas the tungsten filament light bulbs are, they have no comparison.
• They are far more durable, since they do not have any metal filament, therefore they cannot be damaged. They hold well to all jumps and jarrings.
• They emit less heat, practically speaking hardly any. Only 3.4btu's /hour as compared to 85 btu's for metal filament bulbs.
• There is no material mercury used in these bulbs.
• They use only 2-10 watts of electricity as compared to min 40 watts by one single metal filament bulb or 1/3 rd of CFL. That is why the battery life is 10 to 15 times longer than any other light source.
• 80% reduction in electricity bearing cost, plus more life and least maintenance cost as compared to the others. All CFL bulbs do break after some time, or leak, but the design of all LEDs is independent of such leakages.
• The initial cost may be high, but looking into the long term spectrum, the total savings, maintenance cost is far lower than its buying price.
• Ideally suitable for all low temperature and remote areas. They can be illuminated with solar panels, portable batteries, without having the need to run it with hard lines, or generators.
• Capacity to work at extreme low temperatures, that is -40 degrees Celsius.
• Most portable and flexibility. Due to their size, they have less weight and can be used anywhere into many devices. As they consume less space as compared to other sources such as CFL or metal filament type, in the place of one such light, even hundreds can be shipped from one place to another at the same or a little more weight, thus commercial economics are also an attraction for the manufacturers. This further requires less storage space. Altogether, it brings a saving of more than 100% on commercial scale moving, shipping and storing.
The applications are outnumbered, as they are according to our any choice. More commonly known is there use in the following:
• Space technology
• Weapons
• Marine vessels
• Electronic devices
• Audio and video devices
• In hardware equipment
• Health equipment
• Lights
• Transport and locomotives
• Aviation
• Home appliances
The applications are a lot more, more than we can even think or had ever thought of. This number wouldn't come to an end here; in fact this would grow thousand folds.
