How to Sew a Pillow Cover
- 1). Lay the pillow flat and measure the length, from one side of the pillow to the other, and the height, from the top of the pillow to the bottom.
- 2). Add 1 inch to each of these dimensions and cut a rectangle of fabric for the front of the pillow cover with these dimensions.
- 3). Cut another fabric rectangle with the same dimensions for the back of the pillow. Add 6 inches to the length measurement and cut a second piece for the back this length and the same height.
- 4). Fold the back pieces in half with the right side of the fabric out and the folds running from the top to the bottom. These will form the two overlapping sides of the back of the cover. The folds give the opening a finished edge.
- 5). Lay the front of the pillow right-side up on the table with the bottom of the fabric rectangle closest to you. Lay the longer back side over the right side of the front with the edges even. Lay the shorter piece over the left side.
- 6). Machine stitch around the entire edge of the pillow cover with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. When you reach a corner, stop with the needle in the fabric, raise the pressure foot and turn the fabric at a 90-degree angle. Lower the pressure foot and continue sewing.
- 7). Clip the seam allowance at the corners at a 45-degree angle and turn the cover right side out. Insert the pillow through the opening in the back of the cover.
