How to Accessorize Book Shelves

    • 1). Remove all of the books from your bookshelf and dust all the shelves.

    • 2). Sort all of your books by category and stack the books, on the floor, according to size with larger books on the bottom and smaller ones on top.

    • 3). Shop around your own home for precious mementos that you want to display such as a pair of antique bookends, framed family photographs, clay sculptures or faux plants.

    • 4). Decide where you want to arrange your books. Ideally, heavy books should be placed on the lower shelves while display items are put on higher shelves to give them prominence.

    • 5). Put all of the books on their designated shelves with taller books on the right and smaller ones on the left. Stack some books horizontally as makeshift bookends to keep the vertical books standing straight. Leave several shelves only partially filled with books; stagger the empty spaces, where you will insert accessories.

    • 6). Arrange the display items in odd numbered groupings such as two items on one shelf and a single item on the shelf that is above or below.

    • 7). Place heavy accessories, such as vases or sculptures, on either side of a row of books to serve as bookends. The accessories do not necessarily have to match, which will add to the overall charm of the filled bookshelf.

    • 8). Keep an eye on colors when arranging the display items and books on the bookshelf to avoid putting similar items next to one another. The colors should contrast to really highlight the arrangement.

    • 9). Place a bouquet of freshly cut flowers in a vase on the center of a shelf to add a touch of warmth. Alternatively, a pot of flowing ivy perched on the top of the bookshelf can help soften the lines.

Add rope or puck lights above each shelf to provide lighting for your bookshelf.
