How to Prevent Freezer Drip
- 1). Reconfigure the thermostat, as your appliance might be too warm for safe food storage. Adjust the controls so that the freezer maintains a temperature around 0 degrees Fahrenheit; a few degrees cooler is fine. Purchase a freezer thermometer from your local hardware store if your appliance doesn't have a digital temperature display. Any changes will take 24 hours to become effective.
- 2). Move the freezer to a cooler location if it is near an oven, radiator or other heat source. Rooms that experience extreme hot and cold temperatures are unsuitable for freezers and should be avoided. Keep your freezer in a location that is out of direct sunlight, if possible. There should be a minimum of three inches clearance on all sides of the freezer. These measures will help improve the appliance's efficiency.
- 3). Think how you use your refrigerator. You should avoid freezing hot or warm containers of food immediately after cooking, as they can raise the internal temperature of the freezer. Try to limit the number of times you open the door. Never prop open the door, as warm air enters the freezer every time you open the door, melting ice from the walls and causing freezer drip.
