How You Can Prevent Your Dog From Digging in Backyard

Why do dogs dig? There are many reasons why dogs dig, once these reasons are understood, it is much easier to prevent such kind of behavior.

Your dog might be digging for as simple a reason as recreation. If he is left all alone at home most of the time, then he has little choice but to enjoy himself by doing fun- activities such as digging. Young dogs use their pent-up energy by doing so.

Many breeds of dogs like terriers do so because they inherit the trait of digging through their genes. To dig is their natural disposition.
Or your dog might be just making him comfortable by digging himself a cool place on a warm sunny day.

It is very natural for a dog to indulge in such activities like digging! They see other dogs doing it all the time, and also by doing so they themselves enjoy a lot!

But if your dog's digging habit is becoming a menace for you, then you can help yourself with a few given ideas:

The best way would be to give your dog sufficient exercise. After all, it is his natural need! Walk him at least twice a day, if not more. And each walk with him should be at least thirty minutes long. Taking your dog for a walk is highly beneficial not only for him, but also for you. The walk will make him healthier, and also less restless. Once his natural need of exercise is fulfilled, he would be interested in enjoying a nap, rather than go around digging your backyard.

Find in your locality, a good dog training program for your dog. You would find many such professionally run classes which are generally held once, or twice in a week. The training would help your dog learn certain basic commands, which would greatly enhance his socialization with people around. By directing the dog on these basic commands, it becomes easy to control his behavior, especially when it is about digging.

You can indulge him in better activities whenever he starts digging. You can start the game of fetch, where he gains a sense of accomplishment and also enjoys a lot because of all the running that is involved.
Even if your dog digs because its there in his genes, then also such behavior can be regularized. You can specify for him an area where he can go and dig and drive his natural urge.

You need to be a little strict to regularize his digging behavior. Constant reinforcement using the same verbal command, and intonation as in phrases like €No digging' would get him accustomed to what is required from him to do. You can be strict, but never be cruel. It can never let you accomplish the desired goals.

But if nothing of this works, why don't you provide him with a cool, shady place where he can relax himself. It is always better to hit the cause, than the effect.
