One Hundred Years Ago

One hundred years ago, in 1912, the Postmaster from Lydenburg caught a fish in a local river that reminded him of a trout. In an area with a cool climate and an abundance of rivers and lakes, he reasoned that it would be an ideal place to release trout.

The trout industry in the area was born and in 1916 the Postmaster released the first trout fingerlings in a few nearby streams.

From these small beginnings, one hundred years later, the area has become one of the premier trout fishing areas in South Africa.

The fly fishing experience is one that is sought after by many people. It is a solitary experience requiring focus and concentration but one that has huge rewards, the peace and tranquillity of the setting, the thrill of the fight and the satisfaction of landing a trophy fish.

The old farms in the area have always been interlaced with a network of streams, rivers and dams. In recent times the numbers of farms has dwindled and have been replaced with estates offering country getaways to the urban populace and of course some of the best fly fishing in the whole of South Africa with waterways stocked with an abundance of impressive trout.

All of this creates a complete fly fishing experience rounded off with a drink of your choice, sitting in front of a log fire at the end of the day.

The area also offers some fantastic birding opportunities, hundreds of kilometres of hiking and biking trails, picturesque picnicking spots and a diverse range of flora.
