Diabetes Diets

    Proper Meal Planning

    • One of the best ways to increase your success and control diabetes is to properly plan your meals. By planning to succeed, you can avoid many of the pitfalls associated with ill-planned diet attempts. The Mayo Clinic recommends eating roughly the same amount of calories and carbohydrates on a daily basis (see Reference 1). This will help with weight control and keep blood sugar levels consistent. By planning your meals in advance, you can also ensure that you set aside proper portion sizes and pick the right foods for your diet.

    Which Foods Should You Eat?

    • To reduce the effects of diabetes, eat a well-balanced diet rich in protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. If possible, eat often and avoid starchy carbohydrates like those in white bread. Also avoid or reduce your intake of fats, sugars, and alcohol. These can have an adverse effect on the body by creating an unhealthy rise in blood sugar. Eat foods high in fiber and low in fat to control weight and avoid heart disease. Individuals who have diabetes are typically at a higher risk for developing life-threatening heart conditions.

    A Healthier Lifestyle

    • In addition to eating a healthier menu of foods, incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Exercise not only burns calories but also helps regulate metabolic function including insulin levels. By exercising at least 30 minutes every day and properly planning and watching your diet, you can avoid much of the negative impact of diabetes.
