How Can I Direct Market My New Invention?

    Target Market

    • Your target market is your buying audience. During the invention process you had a target audience in mind that you felt would be interested in your product. Once the product is ready for market, identify your audience more clearly. Develop study groups consisting of people that you feel fall into the demographic that would be interested in your product, and get their opinions. Bring groups into a controlled area to have them analyze the product. Try groups outside your targeted demographic as well to test the broad appeal of your invention. Ask all groups what they like and do not like about the product. Find out what uses they would have for it. A study group may come up with a use for your product that you had not thought of, and that could open up new marketing avenues. Collect the data of these study groups to determine your target market.

    Creating a Message

    • Craft your message around your audience. Determine the best way to reach your customers, and use your target audience data to understand what your buyers want to know about your product. If your audience is younger people who like your product because of its convenience, then develop avenues of advertising that reach a younger audience and highlight those features they like. Make sure your message points out as many uses for your product as possible. By creating multiple images of your product, you are broadening your marketing appeal to other potential customer groups.

    Distribution

    • The distribution part of your business can build as your company grows. Start finding ways to introduce your invention to your target market through print, radio and television advertising. Create a detailed website that explains and sells your product, and then link that site to the many social networking websites to gain interest. You can offer your product directly by taking payments and shipping orders yourself. As you sell more of your invention, you may want to expand your advertising and maybe consider retail outlets as well. If you choose to sell directly to the public, you will also need to attend to customer service. To get repeat customers, be sure you hire and train a competent customer service staff.
