Spangled Banner probably does not belong in this competition but trainer Rick Dutrow Jr has said that the horse is doing fine. Spngled Banner doesn't have the resume of a winning horse, but he will have Garret Gomez in the irons, and he does have Dutrow as his trainer. Normally getting a jockey like Gomez would be good news but he did nothing aboard Lookin at Lucky in the Derby and then finished poorly aboard Dublin in the Preakness. Last time out on April 17th in the Withers, Spangled Banner finished third.
Uptowncharlybrown could be worth more of a look in Belmont odds than Spangled Banner. His trainer Kiaran McLaughlin believes the horse will like the distance. He could be a surprise horse in the Belmont with his long stride. He was third in the Lexington Stakes.
Stay Put is another horse that is going to have big odds. His connections believe he will really like the mile and a half distance. Steve Margolis, his trainer, has been preparing him to go an extended distance. Richard Klein, Stay Put's owner, also believes that he will like the long distance. He was fifth in the Risen Star and in the Louisiana Derby. The connections would have liked to have run in the Kentucky Derby but they did not have the graded earnings to place in the lineup. They contemplated holding back Stay Put and racing him in the Northern Dancer at Churchill Downs, however they determined the length of the Belmont could be a good thing for Stay Put.
The additional starts for the Belmont stakes include Kentucky Derby fourth place finisher Make Music For Me who is trained by Alexis Barba. With nine career starts, he has 1 win. Preakness runner-up First Dude is another horse expected in the Belmont lineup. Dale Romans is his trainer. In seven career starts, First Dude has 1 win. Behind the favored Ice Box, he may be the second or third choice in the betting.
Game on Dude, Stately Victor and Drosselmeyer will also likely be in the Belmont lineup. Drosselmeyer could get a little backing out of those horses because he was favored against Fly Down in the Dwyer Stakes.
